stories from Micronesia
FSM VP Yosiwo George died Aug. 14, per the Kaselehlie Press. George was 81 years old and served in a number of public service roles including teacher, lieutenant governor of Kosrae, director of the FSM Department of Social Services, FSM ambassador to the United Nations and more before taking up his post as VP. Before he died, George was hospitalized, according to news reports.
The FSM has been fighting off a surge in COVID-19 cases after some two years of preventing the virus from taking hold in the community. The Pacific Island Times reported that over 7,000 cases of COVID-19 have been recorded and 21 people have died.
The Marshall Islands is also working to stave off the virus. The Marshall Islands Journal’s Giff Johnson breaks it down nicely in this article.

community science opportunity for Guam residents
The National Weather Service could use your help. Residents can sign up to take rain measurements as part of a community science effort. Who among us doesn’t want to be a scientist? I first heard about this from NWS Guam but it looks like it is a nationwide effort.
Every week I’ll leave you with a send-off song, curated by my brother Henry. This week’s tune “Mr. Lightman” is upbeat, island vibey and the exact reason why I voluntold my brother to do this for The Husk. He is serving VIBES with this pick. As soon as I hit play on this song, I was transported to the beach, feet in the sand with a beverage in my hand.
As the lyrics remind us, we’ve got to keep moving man.
Have a wonderful weekend!
