YouTube videos worth watching
The Marshall Islands was the setting for a recent video that went viral. Huge waves smashed into a military facility in the RMI, according to reporting from ABC 13 and CNN. The Marshall Islands have quite low elevation making them extreeeeemely vulnerable to rising sea levels.
I think most people have already seen this video, and I also think it bears revisiting, resharing, reviewing.
ReadsWithRosa interviewed Cathy Payne, an author from Guam. I had the absolute pleasure of working with Cathy at the Pacific Daily News and thoroughly enjoyed learning more about her from this interview. Go, Cathy!

Also, Rosa has been doing this podcast for years, and I’m so impressed.
The YouTube algorithm machine fed me this Micronesian Production video that explores the minimum wage in Chuuk.
newsletters worth a subscription for news around the Pacific
Pacific Islands Report from the Pacific Islands Development Program
PIR offers a representative collection of news from around the Pacific.
Pacific Winds from the Pacific Center for Island Security
Initially, I subscribed to Pacific Winds to keep an eye on what the Guam-based think tank PCIS was up to. Pacific Winds has quickly become one of the newsletters on my must-read list. I don’t know anyone else providing a consistent roundup of news focused on U.S.-China relations and its impact on the Pacific islands. It’s quite a handy collection of links.
group of jiujitsu athletes
FSM BJJ traveled to Guam earlier this month to take part in the 2024 Copa de Marianas tournament, per The Guam Daily Post.
This week’s send-off song comes not from my brother but thanks to a post by Kendall T on the Mic who posted about this on Facebook. The music video for “Someone Loves You Honey” by Tenelle was filmed in Palau!
We’re building a send-off song playlist on Spotify that includes the songs mentioned in past Weekender posts. Check it out.
Hope you had a great weekend.
Thanks for the updates, wow that's a flood in Marshall islands.
