articles about the Pacific
From Stories From the Pacific, a super profile of Matt Howard, co-founder of Micronesian production company Soused Life.
We love an Anita Hofschneider byline around these here parts. Important stories for Grist: Indigenous youth are at the center of major climate lawsuits. Here’s why they’re suing. | A year after the worst wildfire in modern US history, the people of Maui try to heal
From The New York Times, Olympic Surfing Comes to a ‘Poisoned’ Paradise
important stories about Micronesian skirts
I’m so impressed with Dr. Emelihter Kihleng’s work. She was sourced in these two recent pieces talking about urohs.
Cassie Ordonio (who is from Guam!) reported about the threat of non-Pohnpeian manufacturers diluting the Indigenous art of urohs-making through mass production for Hawai’i Public Radio
For ABC Pacific, Natasha Meten spoke with Dr. Emelihter Kihleng about urohs designs, their history, and their cultural importance.
article about Guam
From RNZ, Governor of Guam says nuclear weapons 'needed' for peace
Reporter Eleisha Foon did a good job of pressing the governor on this issue, so it’s a welcome report in that respect.
Gov. Leon Guerrero also spoke about PIF membership, which, per the Marianas Business Journal, membership for Guam, the NMI, and American Samoa will be discussed later this month.
PLUS: This story from The Guam Daily Post’s John O’Connor about the open house the Missile Defense Agency held in Guam about proposed missile defense testing is worth a read. In the article, we see that landowners who will be directly impacted by the proposed testing walked away from the open house without a clear understanding of the military’s plan AND there seemed to be conflicting information even provided by those speaking for the military.
With each issue of the Weekender we’ll leave you with a send-off song (not necessarily from a Micronesian artist) curated by my brother, Henry, whose musical tastes have left a lifelong impression on me and, now hopefully, you.
This month’s send-off song is a classic: “Stuck on You” by Ekolu.
We’re building a send-off song playlist on Spotify that includes the songs mentioned in past Weekender posts. Check it out.
Thank you for reading! Have a great weekend,

“All the gold in the world is not enough to compensate us... This is paradise, but our paradise is poisoned.”
For generations, our lands, waters, air, and people have suffered — and continue to suffer — at the hands of colonizers.
We must do everything we can to hold colonial powers accountable for their actions — or rather, their inaction.
