quote
Grist dropped a piece on deep-sea mining by the brilliant Anita Hofschneider that really helped me understand the issue. I’ve been thinking about it since. Read the piece here: https://grist.org/energy/deep-sea-mining-minerals-pacific-peoples/
A quote from that piece:
“Deep-sea mining, that’s like you’re digging up the grave of my ancestors.”

With every issue of the Weekender, we’ll leave you with a send-off song (not necessarily from a Micronesian artist) curated by my brother, Henry, whose musical tastes have left a lifelong impression on me and, now hopefully, you. This month’s song, however, comes by way of friend of the newsletter Tamatoa, who flagged this song for me. The Chuukese version has been all over my social media feed over the past few weeks, and I didn’t realize it was a cover lol. So I’m sure all of you are already listening to “Carry My Heart” by Myshaan in all the languages.
We’re building a send-off song playlist on Spotify that includes the songs mentioned in past Weekender posts. Check it out.
Also! I’d love to know what songs are carrying you to the weekend.
A bit light this month, but forgive me, it’s been a month! I hope you all are well.
Thank you for reading! Have a great weekend,
Jasmine
